This is the second girl introduced to the universe by my wife and I. Funny, I remember when I was in college and someone cynically said something to the effect of, “Why would people bring someone new into this world of pain and hate?!?” She looked so smart and righteous–to no one. [This person now has a couple of kids. I’m guessing she changed her mind.]
I get where this perspective comes from. There is STILL a truckload of evil out there: terrorism, nuclear threats, poverty, human trafficking, etc., etc., etc. Also, what if my kids or their kids can’t drive cars because gas is so expensive?!?!?!?! What if our comfortable way of life has to change to help fix the environment or altar systemic advantages we U.S. citizens enjoy at the expense of others? THE HORRORS!!!!
Here’s why we brought another human being into the world: Love. We are going to raise her, like we are raising Livvy, to love.
Love is what’s going to change this world. It conquers nations; it dulls the sharpest sword. Love turns the murderous, religious elite into tender-hearted poets. It transforms hearts of stone into hearts of flesh.
So I say this with all seriousness and trepidation: Look out, world. Another Swanson girl is getting prepped to enter the fray. Rosie’s not going to pull punches on loving you–not if her mom and I and Jesus have anything to do with it.
